“Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
and pretend that he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.“
This song by Bob Dylan from the early sixties is as meaningful now as it was then, if not even more. Well over 50 years later I ask myself the same questions. What happened in between the times?
The wars have not diminished; the scenery has simply changed. There is still hunger in the world. The world’s resources are vanishing. Air and water pollution have worsened. We see that the leaders who rule the big corporations and countries are filled with greed.
And so I ask myself: what else does it take for us to change? How much worse does it have to get? How many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn’t see?
I would say, the answer, my friend is, that many have stopped turning their head, and do see. Many people have stopped eating so much meat. Many have stopped using so much plastic. Many have stopped using their car, but rather go on foot or by bike. Many watch what they buy, checking first to see where it comes from, how the product was made and ask: “Is it fair trade? Is it organic?”
People have become conscious about what words they use, asking themselves: ”Are these words friendly, or are they harmful?” They are beginning to make a change for the better. There are even people in the media bringing to light the positive change around the world. The beauty and the abundance around us is being noticed. I see more people looking up into the sky to see the rainbows, the sunsets and sunrises, the stars and the moon. More and more are seeing the light, which becomes brighter and stays longer.
„Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.“
May the still young and innocent 2019 be the year where we all SEE.
